‘... Your grateful Dietrich’ – this is how Dietrich Bonhoeffer signed many of his letters. Most of them were addressed to family members and friends, who were the most important people in his life and formed the network that made resistance to National Socialism possible. Bonhoeffer's letters thus provide an important and authentic insight into his personality. They can be regarded as a substitute for an autobiography, so to speak.
These letters are not only worth reading because of their historical background – they are also a pleasure to read. Dietrich was a passionate letter writer – a person who lived in and through relationships and whose thoughts only fully unfolded in conversation with others.
